The Importance of Taking Care of Your Family

Family is where life begins and where love is meant to grow. In the busyness of everyday life, it is easy to focus on work, schedules, and responsibilities — and forget that the most important thing we can do is take care of the people closest to us.

Taking care of your family does not always mean big gestures. Sometimes it is the quiet moments that matter most: sitting down for a meal together, listening without distraction, showing up when someone is struggling, putting a candle in a store-bought cake because the day still deserves to be marked.

We built this foundation as a family. Kate and Dave Spaeth, Gold Canyon, a kitchen-table nonprofit with an EIN and a lot of handwritten notes. We know what it is to take care of our own, and we know how quickly a family can need a little extra luck from the people around them.

For many families in Maricopa County, daily life is harder than it should be. A job change. A medical bill. A stretch of months where there is no room for “extra.” When we help a child celebrate a birthday or enjoy a family outing, we are not replacing a parent’s love. We are standing beside it so that love has a chance to look like a party, not only like survival.

If you are in a season of taking care of your own, start there. Then, if you have anything left — an hour, a check, a bag of hygiene items, a kind word — there is a child nearby whose family is doing the same hard math. That is the circle. Family first, then the next family.
